25 Years Later, Fugitive Wanted in Philadelphia Girl’s Murder Taken into Custody
A quarter-century after a 5-year-old girl was kidnapped and murdered in Philadelphia, authorities have captured a man wanted in connection with the crime.
Late last week, the FBI announced the arrest of Alexis Flores.
Alleged Crime Timeline
According to WCAU-TV, 5-year-old Iriana DeJesus was first reported missing in late July 2000. On August 3rd of that year, her body was found in the basement of an empty apartment building near her home; she had been sexually assaulted, strangled, and wrapped in a trash bag.
Investigators say a resident who had lent Flores, who was using the name "Carlos," some clothing recognized a unique t-shirt at the crime scene, which was where Flores had allegedly been staying.
After fleeing Philadelphia, two years later, Flores was arrested for shoplifting in Arizona.
Then, in 2004, police came to Flores's home after receiving a noise complaint. In that case, he allegedly gave police fraudulent identity documents. He spent 60 days in prison and was then deported to Honduras.
In 2006, a sample of Flores' DNA was added to the Combined DNA Index System. In 2007, authorities said his DNA sample matched what was found at the crime scene in Philadelphia and it was determined that "Carlos" and Flores were the same person.
Since then, Flores had been on the run and was one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives.
Alexis Flores Captured
Authorities did not release any specific information about his capture; however, CBS News reported that he was arrested in Honduras.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel said, "For a quarter century, this case has weighed heavily on the hearts of our City, especially the family of this young victim and the detectives who never stopped working on her behalf. This arrest is the result of relentless investigative work and the strength of true partnership between the Philadelphia Police Department, the FBI, and our federal and international law enforcement partners."
Family Reaction
Upon hearing the news, Iriana DeJesus' family gathered to celebrate the arrest.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
