A few years after 9/11, the federal government made the move to update to Real ID. According to that Wiki page, there has been a lot of opposition from various states over the years, but after some changes were made more and more states started to accept the new rules.

Starting in 2020, you won't be able to fly, even domestically, by just using an 'old' driver's license as identification. So far 34 states have updated their IDs, and 22 (including NJ) have filed for and been granted extensions.

Since my wife and I visit her family in Florida two or three times a year, it is definitely a priority for us to update. The biggest drawback will be the massive lines at the MVC when everybody has to update their license. Thanks for waiting to the last minute, Jersey.
