Being able to go to the mall on a Friday or Saturday night as a teenager was kind of like a right of passage growing up.

There was nothing more fun than meeting up with friends, and strolling aimlessly for a few hours either catching up, telling jokes, or spending hours walking around.

However, those nights seem to be a thing of the past now that some malls are starting to ban kids and teens from walking the mall without a parent or guardian.

Kids Are No Longer Welcome

It's not the first time we've heard something like this happening in New Jersey.

Just about a year ago Nettie's House Of Spaghetti banned children from eating at its Tinton Falls restaurant.

Now, it looks like one pretty popular New Jersey mall is following suit, banning teenagers from walking around the mall unattended on the weekends.

Teens Not Welcome At The Deptford Mall Without A Chaperone

As reported by NJ.com, the Deptford Mall is reminding people that teens under the age of 18 will be kicked out of the mall if they are not accompanied by a parent or guardian on the weekends.

More specifically Friday, Saturday, and Sundays after 5 PM.

Kids under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian who's at least 25 years of age or older accompanying them while on mall property or they will be kicked out.

According to the Deptford Mall Code Of Conduct:

  • Visitors under the age of 18 years are required to be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult age 25 or older on Friday through Sunday night after 5PM and must remain within the company of their parent or supervising adults.
  • Unsupervised youth shopping prior to 5PM on Friday through Sunday evenings must leave the mall by 5PM or be joined by a parent or supervising adult 25 or older.
  • Proof of age may be required for the youth and/or supervising adult. Those who lack proper identification will not be granted entry and may be asked to leave the property.

On one side, I do understand that it's not the Mall's job to watch people's kids on the weekend and keep them out of trouble, it's a lot.

However, as a former mall rat teenager not everyone under 18 is going to the mall just to cause trouble.

A sad, desolate look at NJ's Old Monmouth Mall

It was the last Christmas Eve for New Jersey's Monmouth Mall in Eatontown before major redevelopment in 2024. Here's what it looked like on that day.
