OCEAN (MONMOUTH)— Witnesses now say that they believe the description of the vehicle that hit inadvertently hit a police officer in Ocean Township and then took off, police say.

Officer Glennis Polanco was assisting the New Jersey Department of Traffic blocking the left lane of Route 18 southbound in the area of Route 66. At the same time, debris from a previous crash was being cleared.

While she was standing outside of her police vehicle, it was sideswiped by a car. The impact of the crash caused the police vehicle to move several feet and knock Polanco to the ground.

Witnesses now tell police they believe the vehicle was a mid-sized sedan and either white or light in color. The vehicle was also described to have front damage on the driver's side that continued down the same side of the vehicle. The sedan also had an unknown New Jersey registration, police say.

Polanco sustained minor injuries from the crash and was hospitalized. She was treated and released the same day.

Locally, this is not the only violation of New Jersey's "Move Over Law". Last week, a Brick Township Police Officer narrowly avoided injury after his police cruiser was hit during a traffic stop on Route 70 westbound.

The vehicle in that incident, though, stopped after hitting the police cruiser and was issued a summons for Improper Passing of an Emergency Vehicle.
