The Best Bridge In The US? The Route 72 Span Is Up For Big Award

Is the best bridge in all of the United State of America right here in Ocean County?

Well, we could make that happen if we all get in on the public voting for the 2020 edition of America's Transportation Awards.

Our very own Manahawkin Bay Bridge is in the running against 11 other big American engineering projects.

From a $2 billion Arizona freeway to a Seattle tunnel that's been designed to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, our Route 72 bridge connecting the mainland to Long Beach Island has some stiff competition.

As us locals know well, there's been plenty of work on the span over the last number of years, with the $87 million project to replace the bridge coming to completion just in time for summer 2019.

The 12 finalists, which you can check out by clicking here, now go head to head for the national Grand Prize and the People's Choice Award, each of which carry a pretty big award - $10,000 that can be used, "...for a charity or transportation-related scholarship of the winners’ choosing."

Voting on the 2020 America's Transportation Awards runs through this coming Sunday, October 25th, and you can vote once per day.

In fact, if you're having a hard time choosing, you can vote for as many projects as you like.

The big $10,000 winners of America's Transportation Awards will be announced at the November 9th (virtual) annual meeting of The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
