Sandy Hook beaches were closed on Wednesday after tests showed high bacteria levels in the water.

Pete McCarthy, coordinator of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Park., said Beach D showed high bacteria levels when tested on Tuesday. The beach will remain closed until bacteria levels come down to allowable levels. He said the water was retested on Wednesday, but since the results won't be available until Thursday, Beach D will remain closed as a precaution.

The parking area for Beach D is closed and visitors are being directed to the other beaches on Sandy Hook.

Beach D was closed one day last year because of high bacteria levels.
