I love living in Jersey, with easy access to beaches, amazing local mom-and-pop restaurants that make some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life, and of course there are tons of great places to catch some live music.

What I've always loved about Jersey though was the cheap gas.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, any time we'd head to the Jersey Shore for vacation I'd get a little extra excited because I knew filling up the tank would cost less than it did in PA.

If gas costs $2.50 in Pennsylvania (yes, I'm aging myself here) it would only be like $2.00 once we crossed the bridge into Jersey.

Over the past few years though, the difference between the cost of gas in Jersey and our neighboring states has been less and less, and soon we'll be paying even more when we fill up.

Increased taxes? It's something we're seeing more and more of in Jersey, and we now have one of the highest gas taxes in the country, and it's set to increase again at the start of the new year.

According to NJ.com, the gas tax will rise by 2.6 cents starting January 1st, 2025.

That means for regular fuel you're paying 34.4 cents a gallon in tax, and if you use diesel you'll be paying 38.4 cents a gallon in taxes.

It's frustrating, but there's a reason for it.

Why Is The NJ Gas Tax Rising In 2025?

The tax is used for the Transportation Trust Fund which helps keep Jersey's infrastructure updated and repaired when needed.

Each year, they asses the state's needs and decide whether they need to increase, or in rare cases, decrease the fuel tax.

So sure, I don't want to pay any more in fuel tax than I need to, but if it means we get updates to our public transportation, roads, and highways, then I guess I'll pay.

Honestly, what other choice is there?
