Veterans day is a time for us to honor those who fought to ensure the freedoms we enjoy every day.

On my family's side, my grandpa is a veteran, he played in the United States Presidential Band.

On my wife's side, Veterans day is a very important day of the year.

Her father was a Vietnam War Veteran, and some of her grandparents fought in World War II.

Of course, the easiest way to thank a Vet on Veterans day is to simply thank them for their service if you happen to run into someone in uniform or know they served.

There are other ways people show Veterans their appreciation and that's with free meals.

In another lifetime, I was a bartender and the restaurants I worked at always did something for Veterans on Veteran's Day.

Whether it was a free meal, or a specialty menu item, we always tried to do something for the Vets.

This year is no different, and there are many restaurants, both local and chains that are offering free or discounted meals to Veterans.

According to Restaurant News, in order for Veterans to get a free meal at these locations it's pretty simple.

Mainly, they just have to show a military ID.

Restaurants that are offering a free meal this year include Applebee's, California Pizza Kitchen, Cracker Barrel, Dickey's Barbecue Pit as well as a ton of others.

Other restaurants may not be offering a free meal, but they do have some really good deals.
