A Neptune township man stands accused of stealing $23,028.25 in Social Security Disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income Benefits that were written out to his deceased wife.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni announced Friday that Richard Hayes, 59, has been charged with third degree Theft of Movable Property for taking the money for his personal use.

An investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office that was launched in May after they learned from the Inspector General and Social Security Administration learned that between December of 2015 and June of 2019, Hayes covered the money meant for his wife.

Hayes would make ATM withdrawals and check card purchases from his wife’s account by using her debit card, Prosecutor Gramiccioni said, and purchases and withdrawals were also made on a regular basis around the time of each month’s anticipated automatic deposit of the benefits and supplemental Social Security income.

The case is assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Diane Aifer.
