Piscataway Man Facing Federal Charge

A North Jersey man has been arrested for allegedly sending obscene material to a teenager.

21-year-old Mahir Chaudhry of Piscataway was taken into custody on August 27th and he is facing one count of transferring obscene material to a minor.

Chaudhry appeared in Newark federal court the following day and he was detained pending approval of certain bail conditions.

Allegations of Obscene Images Sent to Teen

FBI Statement on the Arrest

Stefanie Roddy with the FBI's office in Newark said in a press release, "Chaudhry’s arrest is impactful on many fronts. He can no longer cause harm to minor victims, as the complaint alleges, and his arrest serves as a warning to others who think their actions are unseen. The FBI and our partners will stop at nothing to find and apprehend these predators."

Potential Penalties if Convicted

The charge of transferring obscene material to a minor is punishable by up to a decade in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Acting U.S. Attorney and Special Attorney Alina Habba thanked the FBI's Child Exploitation Operational Unit, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, and international partners for their work in this case.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

NJ arrests 31 accused child predators in "Operation 24/7"

A roundup of 31 men have been accused of sexually exploiting children online, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced on July 14 while detailing "Operation 24/7."

The suspects “possessed and or distributed videos and images of child sexual abuse, including in many cases videos of young children being raped by adults,” Grewal said.

Chat apps and gaming platforms remain favorite hunting grounds for child predators and even as the pandemic winds down, many children have continued to spend more time online.

State Police received 39% more tips in just the first 6 months of 2021 than they received in the entire year in 2019. The following are suspects charged in "Operation 24/7."
