A big supermarket chain appears to be closing a handful of stores across the country and one of those locations is in the Garden State.

And when you hear that a supermarket is closing, the first question that comes to mind is, "Why?"

If everyone has to eat at some point shouldn't it be easy to run a supermarket?

Not exactly.

Like any other business, lots of factors are in play, including real estate/lease issues, competing stores opening, and more people shopping online, just to name a few.

And that's not to mention the latest batch of problems: supply chain issues, problems finding workers, an increase in shoplifting, and, of course, inflation, which causes people to pinch pennies any way they can.

Shutting down

With those factors in mind, according to the Asbury Park Press, Lidl will be shutting down its store in Howell, Monmouth County, in about two weeks, calling it an "underperforming location."

That Lidl had opened about three years ago on Feb. 26th, 2020, at the site of an old Best Buy store.

At the time, Robert Nowicki, manager of the Howell store, told patch.com,

Lidl is bringing high quality groceries at low prices to Howell this month and we’ll work hard to be the number one shopping destination in the area. The team and I look forward to serving the Howell community.

Still almost two dozen left

Those saddened to hear the news that Lidl in Howell is shutting down can still visit the nearly two dozen other stores remaining open in the state. Lidl stores stretch from Park Ridge and Riverdale in North Jersey, Eatontown and Toms River in Monmouth-Ocean, down to Egg Harbor Township and Vineland in South Jersey.

Additionally, a new Lidl store will be opening in the near future at Freehold Raceway Mall, which is about a 15-minute drive from Howell.

Not the only one

Other Lidl locations that are closing are in the Charlottesville, VA, and Greensboro, NC, areas. Like their store in Monmouth County, those two stores had only been open for two to three years.
