Honestly, I knew a handful of these, but several were completely new to me. It just goes to show that no matter how long you've lived in New Jersey, there's always something that can surprise you.

Since we call Ocean County home, I thought it'd be fun to start with the roads closest to us before taking a little trip around the rest of the state.

1. Double Trouble Road, Toms River

This one is practically in our backyard. (WE all know this one, but wait until you check out some of these others.)

If you've ever headed toward Double Trouble State Park, you've probably driven on Double Trouble Road. The name definitely grabs your attention and almost sounds like you're asking for problems before you even arrive.

Thankfully, the only trouble you'll likely run into is deciding whether to stay longer and enjoy the beautiful pine forests.

2. Easy Street, Howell Township

Who wouldn't want to live on Easy Street?

The expression has always meant living the good life, so seeing it on an actual street sign always gets a smile. Hopefully life there really is as easy as the name suggests.

3. Nutswamp Road, Middletown Township

This has to be one of the funniest names in New Jersey.

Every time I hear Nutswamp Road, I picture squirrels running the neighborhood. The name has historic roots, but if you've never seen the sign before, it definitely sounds made up.

4. Purgatory Road, Southampton Township

Now this one sounds like it belongs in a scary movie.

Just hearing the name Purgatory Road is enough to make you wonder what happened there years ago. Whether you're superstitious or not, it's certainly one of the state's most unforgettable road names.

5. Hoes Lane, Piscataway

Yes...it's real.

Every time someone mentions Hoes Lane, somebody laughs. The name actually comes from an old family surname, but without knowing that history, it's easy to see why this road gets so much attention.

I don't think so.

10. Shades of Death Road, Warren County

If there's one road that tops almost every list of unusual New Jersey street names, it's this one.

Shades of Death Road has built a legendary reputation over the years because of its eerie name. Whether you've heard the stories or not, just seeing the sign is enough to make you stop and say, "Wait...that's a real road?"
