According to some Census reports, New Jersey is home to a large number of retirees. Approximately 1.7 million residents are 65 or older, the age when many people typically retire, which accounts for roughly one in five people in the state. If you include those aged 60 and above, the total rises to approximately 2 million residents.

A sizable portion of New Jersey’s population is retired or close to retirement, which plays a big role in the kinds of services and programs you see across the state. That's why this latest report is good news for retirees in the Garden State.

Where is the Best Small Town to Retire in New Jersey?

According to a new GoBankingRates.com report, "Mays Landing is being named the best place to retire in New Jersey."

The report added that "Mays Landing is a small town in Atlantic County with a population of roughly 6,000. GoBankingRates estimates the average monthly cost of living there at $1,828. The average monthly mortgage cost is about $1,978, which is lower than the national average. The typical single-family home is priced around $332,000, a figure that looks almost modest by New Jersey standards, especially given the staggering cost of retiring in the State."

Mays Landing is a nice place if you enjoy a calm, small-town atmosphere with plenty of space to breathe. It has lots of trees, parks, and outdoor spots like Lake Lenape, where people go to walk, fish, or relax.

Mays Landing has a friendly, close-knit feel, and since it’s a central spot in Atlantic County, shopping and everyday services are easy to get to. Plus, you’re not far from the beach, so you can enjoy the shore without dealing with heavy crowds all the time.

According to Healthgrades, there are several medical centers near Mays Landing:

  • AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus"A full-service hospital in Pomona, about 10 miles away, with emergency care and a wide range of services for adults and children."

  • Shore Medical Center"Located in Somers Point, around 12–15 miles from Mays Landing, this hospital offers general medical and emergency services."

I find Mays Landing to be a very nice option for retirement here in New Jersey. Lots of shopping and easy access to the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway for traveling.
