AARP Gives This NJ Town The Lowest Livability Score We Could Find
New Jersey has some of the priciest real estate and most congested roads in the country, so when AARP updated its Livability Index, plenty of Garden State residents started plugging in their zip codes. The tool scores every community in the U.S. from 0 to 100 based on things that actually shape daily life: how walkable your block is, how far you have to drive for a doctor, whether you could afford to stay in your town as you get older.
The score isn't a gut feeling. AARP built the index with its Public Policy Institute and outside researchers, pulling data from more than 50 national sources plus regional data where it's available. Every town gets rated across seven categories: housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement, and opportunity, and those seven get blended into one overall number.
Housing measures affordability and options. Neighborhood looks at how close you are to jobs and daily needs. Transportation covers getting around without a car for every errand. Environment tracks air and water quality. Health factors in access to care. Engagement measures broadband and civic involvement. Opportunity covers economic mobility and local government.

Maurice River Township, New Jersey
Here's where it gets interesting close to home. Maurice River Township, the Cumberland County community known for its Pine Barrens forest and the scenic river it's named for, pulled one of the lowest overall scores we could find anywhere in New Jersey: a 37 out of 100. The national high score on the index sits at 72, so that's a rough gap.
The category breakdown explains why. Engagement bottomed out at 19. Opportunity landed at 32. Transportation and Neighborhood both came in at 34. That tracks with a township that covers 96 square miles but holds fewer than 6,000 residents, with no real downtown, minimal public transit, and long drives for shopping, work, or a doctor's appointment- exactly what this index is designed to catch.
Is Maurice River Township A Good Place To Live?
It depends on what you're after. Health and Environment both scored a respectable 49, boosted by clean air and all that untouched open space. So the index isn't punishing rural towns across the board; it's measuring access, and wide open space doesn't come with easy access built in. If quiet and scenery top your list, Maurice River delivers. If daily convenience matters more, the numbers explain why it struggles.
