We all know Alice Cooper puts on one hell of a show, and this weekend fans were treated to two of them — a Friday night concert in Biloxi, Miss., and a Saturday night performance at the Bonnaroo festival. And at both, he trotted out a bizarre song for his final encore of the night: a cover of Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way.’

The sets included the usual suspects — ‘I’m Eighteen,’ ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’ and ‘School’s Out,’ for example — and a couple songs from last year’s ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’ album. USA Today reports, “Before the first of those, he donned a jacket emblazoned with the words NEW SONG, later removing it to reveal the song’s title, ‘I’ll Bite Your Face Off.’”

Standard stuff for Cooper, but when he came out to do his last encore, concert-goers witnessed something unusual indeed — Alice and his band launched into a cover of Lady Gaga’s empowerment anthem, ‘Born This Way.’ Reports from the show say many of the rock fans in attendance didn’t even know what the song was, while those who did were either highly amused or downright pissed off at the homage.

But it wasn’t completely out of the blue. Cooper and Gaga are fans of each other’s work — after the two met at one of her shows in March of last year, she tweeted “I just died and went to hell” and included the above photo of them together.

And the rocker has called Mother Monster “the female Alice Cooper,” adding, “She totally gets it … She can sing, write and play piano — she’s not just a costume queen … you can be as outrageous as you want as long as you back it up with the music.”

Regardless, hearing Cooper perform ‘Born This Way’ is a true worlds-colliding moment. You can put us firmly in the “amused” camp.
