The Atlantic Highlands Police Department is looking for help to find the person who stole three bronze plaques honoring those lost on 9/11.

The plaques are located at the Mt. Mitchell Scenic Overlook, where the NYC skyline is visible from Atlantic Highlands. The plaques feature a timeline of the attacks on 9/11, along with the names, ages and hometowns of 147 residents who were killed in the attacks, and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen towers of the World Trade Center.

Any assistance in locating the plaques and identifying a possible suspect is appreciated, and the AHPD will keep all calls and tips to officers confidential. Please call Atlantic Highlands Police Headquarters at (732) 291-1212 with any information.

You can also contact Monmouth County Crime Stoppers, which pays up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of criminals and fugitives. People with information can call 1-800-671-4400; text "MONMOUTH” plus their tip to 274637; or email a tip via the website at MonmouthCountyCrimeStoppers.com.

I wish I could say I can't imagine what kind of person would steal those plaques...but I really can picture the type of scumbag who has some political or conspiratorial agenda and doesn't care about trampling on the memory and legacy of other people. I would actually be relieved to find out it was some high school prank gone awry rather than some tin-hat lunatic.
