I am a Yankee fan first and foremost, but I absolutely tuned in to SNY last night to see how the Miami Marlins would honor Jose Fernandez. I'm a huge baseball fan, an appreciator of players from teams beyond my favorite, and I was shocked and saddened over the death of Fernandez.

The entire Marlins team wore #16 Fernandez jerseys, and surrounded the mound for a moment of silence pregame. I am not embarrassed to say that the solo trumpet rendition of "Take Me Out To the Ballgame" sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. The emotions carried from the players to the fans straight up to the broadcast booth, where Mets announcers Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Gary Cohen broke down.

Dee Gordon followed the ceremonies in story-book fashion, leading off the game batting right-handed for one pitch while wearing Fernandez’s helmet, before turning around to his natural left-handed stance. Then this happened

RIP Jose.
