As the A to Z Anthology rolls on, here’s another music nugget to enjoy:

Ray Davies wrote this nostalgic song about his older sister Gwen. It describes how guys would take her out dancing, only to be frustrated at the end of the night when all they would get for their efforts (and money) was a kiss on the cheek.

Clive Davis, the president of Arista Records, disagreed with Davies’ choice of this as the album’s single. However, he allowed to be released even though he thought it “a ditty” and too slight to be the smash hit it became. The song was the group’s biggest American hit since “Tired of Waiting for You” also reached #6 in 1965.

Freehold native Robert Gibbons and Toms River resident Anthony DeGraaf started the program called United Strong Against Bullying (USA Bullying) along with WWE/TNA superstar and Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle which aims to educate and motivate students to stand up against bullying and stand strong in the face of adversity.

The program is in its infancy now, being started as a joint-venture between the two Garden State residents and pro wrestler, who formed an unlikely friendship after the pair worked with him on several other of Kurt Angle’s side ventures. Gibbons’ says that they plan to use the appeal and personality of Kurt Angle in order to convey the message to participants of all ages.

He says USA Bullying’s goal is to continue building onto the work done by other national and statewide organizations while working to improve wherever possible. Hopefully, setting the standard in some areas for others to follow.

He says what makes Angle’s speeches relatable is that while he is a larger-than-life sports entertainment personality; his struggles through life have been very relatable.

“A lot of times people, especially pro wrestlers like Kurt, they’ve been bullied when they were little, and that’s what actually motivated them to be great and be champions and succeed in all of things that they do. ”

The tri-fold message of unity, responsibility, and perseverance is something Gibbons and his partners want to take to schools throughout the area, making sure to reach out not only to the bullied, but the bullies also. He notes that sometimes the worst bullies could be the school’s best athletes.

“You protect the people. You’ve been given physical gifts, either god given or through incredible hard work, and by having those gifts you are responsible for the people that aren’t maybe as blessed as you are. ”

He says that it’s important to let the victims of bullying know, “it gets better” and that they should continue to persevere. Gibbons references the struggles Kurt Angle has faced, from bullying throughout his childhood, to the murder of his Olympic coach, to breaking his back six months before trials, to the unfortunate passing of his brother. He says that while the bullied feel very much like victims, it’s important to let them know they can rise above it.

“We are living and walking proof that if you just stay focused on the positive and find the positive, there’s a positive in every situation. You want to promote that good things can happen from bad situations; it’s what you make of the situation.”

Gibbons says that Kurt Angle has signed on his own personal time to work with the program however they are currently in talks with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) to expand their roster of speakers to include other performers.

Metallica’s ‘Orion Music + More’ concert promotes diversity by booking an eclectic group of bands to perform during the two day music, arts and lifestyle festival. Taking place on June 23 and 24 at Bader Field in Atlantic City, N.J. the idea of Metallica organizing and headlining their own festival definitely rocks — but apparently some fans are questioning the alt-centric lineup.

Some of the acts booked; Artic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Gaslight Anthem, Cage The Elephant and A Place To Bury Strangers definitely yield towards the alternative genre versus that of a classic rock or metal genre. Still, heavier acts such as Avenged Sevenfold, The Sword and Liturgy are also scheduled to perform. But with Metallica wearing the hat of the host, the fans are still asking “where’s the beef?” — because logically, one might expect heavier bands.

During an interview with Billboard.biz, Charlie Walker of C3 (the company working with Metallica to put this fest on) makes it clear that diversity was the biggest factor in booking a bill of opener for ‘Orion Music + More.’

“I’m sure some people have a vision of what they think it is because it’s Metallica, but I think they’ll have a different understanding of what it is after they come and see it,” he said. “I think we’ll try and stick with diversity. You’ll see some more hard rock bands; you’ll see some more alternative bands. We’re certainly not consciously trying to lean it hard rock or indie — we’re trying to make it balanced.”

It’s been said that one of the favored parts of these type festivals is the fact that fans have an opportunity to see acts that ordinarily they wouldn’t have seen or bought a ticket to otherwise. In turn, it gives bands larger exposure while allowing fans to explore various genres and multiple types of bands.

Our biggest question about their aim for diversity: how will this audience respond to Roky Erickson? Only time will tell.

The revitalized Van Halen are ready to light up the sky with their current tour. Even though the trek is just kicking into gear, they are already changing things up a bit. At last night’s show at The Palace Of Auburn Hills in Michigan, they dug deep into the old kit bag and pulled out ‘Girl Gone Bad.’

This obscure gem from the ’1984′ album planted itself right in the middle of a, shall we say, diggin-the-chicks section of the show with ‘Women In Love’ preceding and ‘Beautiful Girls’ following. The crowd was obviously wowed.

From what we can gather, the band hasn’t played this particular song in concert since the ’1984′ tour. It appears that the boys have been making a conscious effort to swap a song or two from night to night to keep things interesting and keep the fans guessing as to what buried treasure they might unearth on any given night — bravo to them for that. Check out the complete setlist from the second night’s stop here.

The Who- Athena

Here’s a music nugget for you:

In a February, 2010 interview with The News of The World, Roger Daltrey said that even though the fans seems to love this song, he didn’t.

Said Daltrey: “No, I never liked that song. It’s a great record. I think what happened with that song, it was originally called ‘Teresa’ and then Pete was talking to me about Nick Roeg’s girlfriend and how he fancied her, and that song was written about her – but then it changed into ‘She’s a bomb’ and I think I’ve got a psychological problem with it.

I listened to it on the record the other day, and it’s a great record; there’s so much energy on that thing but I still don’t think there’s a center to that song. The fact that he changed the title in that and didn’t stick to what it was supposed to be lost it’s center to me.” (thanks, DeeTheWriter – Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
