A Toms River man has been charged with aggravated assault following an attack on an employee at Walnut Street Elementary School on Thursday evening.

Toms River Police said they responded around 6:00 pm for reports of an assault on a school employee.

While the incident took place during after-school hours there was an event going on inside the building from an outside organization.

The suspect, later identified as 21-year old Daron Griffin of Toms River, asked an employee working on the second floor of the school to use the bathroom.

The employee began directing Griffin to the downstairs bathroom when he grabbed the woman by the arm and pulled her into the hallway.

She was able to break free and run down the stairs while Griffin pursued the victim who was able to leave the school through a side door.

Following the attack, Police viewed security camera footage and were able to identify Griffin as the suspect.

Griffin was apprehended and charged on Friday with Aggravated Assault and Criminal Trespass.

It's not known what provoked Griffin to allegedly attack the woman in the school building.
