What do the Georgetown Little League of Delaware, Delmar Little League of Maryland, North Pocono/Dandy Lion Little League of Pennsylvania, Capitol City Little League of Washington DC, Massapequa Little League of New York and the Toms River Little League have in common?  They make up the softball teams competing in the Little League World Series Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament which begins this weekend in Bristol, Connecticut.

Of course Toms River has been known as a power when it comes to Little League Baseball but make way for the ladies who in just their second year of competing captured the state tournament last weekend with a win over Cherry Hill American in the finals behind the outstanding pitching of Izzy Cino.  Prior to that they claimed the District 18 and Section 3 titles and are now among the six teams in the region tournament with the winner to advance to the World Series in Greenville, North Carolina next month along with 7 other teams from the United States and four International teams.  The 12-year old All-Stars are actually made up of players from both the Toms River and Toms River East Little Leagues and in their inaugural season in 2021 they advanced to the sectionals before losing.

Cino, whose father Jim is the manager of the team, is one of five outstanding pitchers who has helped the team go 9-1 during the All-Star run with an ERA under one.  The others are Gia Monetti, Kylie Paladino, Allison D’Adario and Brielle Troy.  The team can also hit as their .348 batting average would attest to.

Toms River’s bid for the Mid-Atlantic Regional title begins Sunday when they face the winner of the Delaware-Pennsylvania game in what is a double elimination tournament.

By the way don’t expect this to be a one-year thing.  Toms River’s 10-year old All-Stars are playing in the state tournament in Secaucus.
