In just 2021 alone, there were 160 fatalities from people not being buckled up making up 47-percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes, according to the most recent data available from the NJ-AG and DHTS.

Over the last five years alone, the age demographic of those who died in the crashes was 25-34 and in 24 percent of crashes where they were not buckled up.

During the campaign in 2022, there were 8,373 seatbelt citations issued across the state and there were also 3,315 summons issued for speeding and 278 impaired driving arrests.

There is a penalty of up to $46 for a seat belt violation in New Jersey.

“Too many New Jerseyans needlessly lose their lives due to motor vehicle-related fatalities, and reducing these preventable deaths is a top priority for my office,” Platkin said in a written statement. “Our campaign will help raise awareness of this critical and proven way of preventing serious injury or death in the event of a motor vehicle crash. Seat belts save lives – it’s that simple.”

Remember to always wear your seatbelt!
