The drivers and passengers involved in a car accident on Route 79 south in Marlboro Tuesday afternoon around 12:15 pm escape without need of hospitalization after a flatbed truck collided with a fuel tanker and power line which caused the tanker to catch on fire.

Marlboro Police responded to the accident that occurred near Old Mill Road that involved a large 2014 flatbed style wrecker which was towing 2 vehicles while traveling north on Route 79.

Police say the large wrecker impacted the back of a 2015 blue Honda that was going in the same direction.

As a result the blue Honda crossed into the oncoming lane of travel and struck a 2010 Land Rover traveling in the opposite direction.

The flatbed ended up leaving the road and impacting a utility pole on the north side causing a transmission power line to come down on the street and onto the fuel tanker truck that was parked southbound.

When the power line came down on the fuel tanker truck it became energized by causing the truck and trailer tires to melt and catch on fire.

The Marlboro Fire Department and the East Freehold Fire Department responded to the accident scene to contain and extinguish the fire until JCP&L were able to respond and turn off the power.

Police say that at this time none of the drivers or passengers needed to be brought to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by Ptlm. David Stattel of the Marlboro Township Police Traffic and Safety Bureau.

Assisting with the accident were the Marlboro Fire Department, East Freehold Fire Department, the Freehold Township Police Department, the Marlboro First Aid Squad, State Department of Transportation, Monmouth County Hazmat, the New Jersey State Police and the Monmouth County Sherriff’s Department.
