Wrestlemania 29 came and went from MeLife Stadium without any major incident as over 75,000 fans came to “the Super Bowl of wrestling” that is the highest grossing event at the 3-year-old stadium.
Fans arrived Sunday afternoon for tailgating and then the big event that featured a number of match-ups involving the WWE’s biggest names including Jon Cena, who beat out The Rock for the WWE championship and the Undertaker keeping his Wrestlemania win streak in tact with his 21st win.
Also appearing to both cheers and boos were Governor Chris Christie, who arrived via helicopter to the center ring who started the show with an official welcome, Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Donald Trump, a WWE Hall Of Famer according to the Star Ledger. Sean “Diddy” Combs and In Living Colour also performed.
On the business end, WWE in a press release said that Sunday night’s event was the highest grossing live event in its history and broke the record for MetLife Stadium’s highest grossing entertainment event. That record was held by a July, 2011 U2 concert.
“On behalf of the great state of New Jersey, I want to thank all of the fans that came from around the world to beautiful MetLife Stadium for WrestleMania 29,” said Christie, who wore a yellow hoodie in the ring. “WWE put on a show like no other and electrified the capacity crowd.”
