So, a couple years ago I found a website that collected every state's most-Googled horror movie villain.

I was frustrated by the results. Beyond the fact that just Googling a villain doesn't necessarily make them the "favorite", a lot of the list just didn't make sense. "Psycho" is a classic, but I had a hard time believing Norman Bates was being Googled that much.

Anyway, back in 2018 New Jersey's most-Googled villain was Frankenstein's Monster (remember, "Frankenstein" was the name of the doctor, not the monster)...and he remains atop the list for New Jersey in 2020.

Here's a few other facts from FrontierBundles:

  • Frankenstein’s Monster led the list, with eleven states searching him most
  • In the 2019 study, Jack Torrance was America’s most-searched-for villain for ten states - he dropped to ONE state in 2020
  • Illinois was a fan of Chucky, perhaps because Chicago was the filming location for the 1988 version of Child’s Play

So, the website does point out that they only included horror movies that were released before 2000, which explains why movies like "It Follows" or "Hereditary" or "The Conjuring" aren't showing up. There is a bit of a quirk though, because Pennywise, the clown from IT, makes an appearance on the list. The original TV mini-series starring Tim Curry as Pennywise came out in 1990, but one would assume that most of the Google searches were related to the big screen versions that came out in 2017 and 2019.

Rounding out the list after Frankenstein's Monster are: Ghostface from the Scream, Chucky from Child's Play, the alien from the Alien, Norman Bates from Psycho, Pennywise from IT, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie from Carrie, Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs, Jack Torrance from The Shining, and Count Dracula.
