This week it was reported that Metallica's self-titled album was the number one selling cd over the past 20 years (1991-2011), according to Neilsen Soundscan.

The 1991 album, also known as 'The Black Album,' beat out the likes of artists such as The Beatles, Santana, Creed and Shania Twain.

The metal masters did come under some criticism though, as this was their first real main stream album that went away from their thrash roots. The album's popularity ultimately cemented the bands' reputation as of the best heavy metal acts of all time
