That's "Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire."

Which to us ignorant and unsophisticated Yanks means absolutely nothing we can actually grasp, because we are incapable of understanding the finer points of being part of such a society.

And also because you would think that, being born in the U.K., the Beatles were, in fact, actually already members, because they were excellent.

When asked how he enjoyed meeting Queen Elizabeth II, John Lennon quipped, "She's much nicer than she is in the photos."
