RoadSnacks.com compiled a list of the Most Redneck Towns in Jersey based on a number of variables. A few are hard to argue against, but there are some towns that shocked me, and I think they got screwed by some of the criteria.

Here is exactly what the site says they used to come up with this list:

The dictionary definition categories

  • Small towns
  • Least amount of high school graduates

And the stereotypical categories

  • Number of bars per city
  • Number of mobile home parks per capita
  • Number of tobacco stores per city
  • Number of places to get fishing gear
  • Number of guns and ammo stores per city
  • Walmarts, Golden Corrals, Bass Pro Shops, and Dollar Generals nearby

Note: For the sake of getting reliable numbers, we counted places within a city’s border, as well as within a short driving distance.

Editor’s note: We heard from several people that Atco, NJ should be on here. We agreed, however, Atco, and other necky places like it are townships, and we didn’t measure townships. Sounds like we should have though.

Some random shockers:

13    Red Bank
15    Freehold
22    Belmar
24    Princeton
59    Manasquan

Red Bank might be one of the least rednecky places I can think of. Admittedly, most of my experiences in Red Bank are centered in downtown, wandering around Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash or Jack's Music Shoppe, and I can only assume the number of bars in town skewed the results.  I also assume the number of bars is what included Belmar, because I don't think I've ever used the term 'redneck' when discussing that town.

You can see the complete 100-town list here, what do you think? Did your town make the list? Was it deserved or not?
