9:39 p.m. - Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect until 10:15 p.m. for Essex, Union, Hudson and south central Bergen counties. A severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts was moving east at 20 mph.

4:20 p.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Salem and Warren counties until 10 p.m.

A slow-moving cold front will keep a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for the Garden State through early Wednesday morning.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, June 28, 2016...

A Bit Wet and Unsettled

Parts of New Jersey experienced some solid rainfall overnight, with totals over an inch in South Jersey. No severe weather, just healthy, much-needed rain. Unfortunately, it's not drought-busting rain - North Jersey needs the rain way more than South.

It's been an "icky, sticky, muggy, uggy" morning so far, thanks to plentiful humidity in the atmosphere. Tuesday morning's batch of rain will taper off (or become very widely scattered) by midday, and we may see a few breaks of sun. The break in the wet weather will allow high temperatures to bump into the upper 70s to lower 80s Tuesday.

As our slow-moving cold front continues moving closer to New Jersey, another round of scattered rain is expected by mid to late afternoon. Limited instability will lead to a narrow window (both in time and geography) for these storms to become strong: along the western edge of New Jersey (near the Delaware River), between about 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible for Tuesday night and perhaps early Wednesday morning, until the approaching cold front sweeps out the rain and ushers in drier air. Patchy fog may form for Wednesday morning, especially in areas that experienced heavy rainfall.

Clearing and Drying Out

Following Tuesday's wet weather, we'll get to enjoy a brief period of dry, pleasant weather. In fact, by Wednesday afternoon, skies will be clearing and humidity will be falling fast. High temperatures should return to the lower to mid 80s, turning into a nice early summer day.

Thursday looks even better - I'm even calling it the "weather winner of the week!" Look for mostly sunny skies, dry weather, relatively low humidity, and warm temps again in the 80s.

The Holiday Weekend

All eyes are on the upcoming holiday weekend. I'm still hesitant to give specifics, as the forecast is still a bit muddled and complicated. But it's becoming clear that no big storm systems will impact New Jersey from Friday through Monday. However, that doesn't mean we'll stay completely dry.

At this point, the best chance for rain over the extended weekend will come in the form of scattered showers on Friday, and then an isolated thunderstorm late Saturday. Otherwise, skies will waver between mostly sunny and partly sunny, with most high temperatures in the 80s.

Again, I'm optimistic we'll have good weather for most of the weekend. We'll be able to add more confident details in the coming days.
