A water main break is creating trouble along Hooper Avenue in Toms River near Indian Hill Road.

Police tell Townsquare Media, it could be a problem for 6 to 8 hours.  They have crews working on it and detours set up. Due to safety concerns, the police and water company needed to close both northbound lanes of the road.

According to the police department, the break happens to be the lateral to Hooper Avenue Elementary School. United Water had to shut off the water flow to the school.

Once it became apparent that the school would remain dry for four to six hours, administrators set alternate plans into motion - placing bottled water in spots throughout the building, assigning custodians to oversee toilet flushings and sending students home at 1:10 PM.

However, once the main is repaired and water flows again, it isn't quite case-closed. United Water keeps the school under a precautionary boil advisory.

School employees will be required to bring tap water to a rolling boil and keep it there for a minute for drinking, cooking, baking, ice cubes, toothbrushing, washing or mixing food, juice or drinks, and feeding pets.

The advisory doesn't apply for washing dishes or clothes, or for showering.

Director of Operations Jim Mastrokalos said the precaution was issued after a consultation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Lab tests on samples taken after the leak is plugged, he said, take 24 to 48 hours.
