[Top 5 Tuesday] The Top Five Thanksgiving Side Dishes
The turkey is the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner, but without everything else, it's just a bunch of meat. Here is the definitive list of side dishes. You may disagree with my rankings, but I have to inform you that you're wrong.
5 - Biscuits
Homemade is preferred, but even the ones out of the can are fine. Light and fluffy, soaked with butter, golden brown. Irresistable.
4 - Mashed Potatoes
Really, the image below isn't what I look for in my mashed potatoes. These are too creamy; I prefer chunkier mashed potatoes.
3 - Cranberry Sauce
The first image is bad. It took me years to enjoy cranberry sauce because for the beginning of my life, we only had this canned junk. Once I was introduced to actual fresh cranberry sauce, it felt like my life changed.
2 - Stuffing
Stuffing needs to be homemade. At the very least, you can take the box stuff as a base, but you need to add and experiment and tweak things.
1 - Sweet Potatoes (Yams)
Without a doubt, the unquestioned king of sides. I eat on average 22 pounds of sweet potatoes every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I could do without the entire rest of the meal, just pile my plate with nothing but sweet potatoes, forever and ever.
