The 78th annual Toms River Halloween Parade is scheduled for Monday, October 31, and everyone is working to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.

With over 6,000 marching in the parade and thousands more lining the streets to watch, the Toms River Parade is second to only the NYC Greenwich Village parade in size, according to organizers.

After the bombing in Seaside Park during the Semper FiveK, parade officials have been working with the township and county to expand security. Carl Weingroff, advisor of parade operations, and parade chairman Matthew Duell have met with the Toms River Police Department, the Toms River Office of Emergency Management, Toms River Fire District Chief John Gonzalez and Toms River EMS, as well as seeking help from the New Jersey State Police, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and the Ocean County Corrections Department.

Weingroff said they "will have extra uniformed and plain-clothed officers on the road as well as K-9 units throughout the entire route."

Weingroff also said the most important part of security efforts is citizen awareness: "If anyone sees something suspicious to please let one of the police officers, firefighters or EMS personnel in uniform know and they will notify the proper authorities."
