Happy (belated) birthday to the genius behind Boston, Tom Scholz, who was born on March 10, 1947 in Toledo, Ohio.

Tom really can easily be described as a modern-day Renaissance Man.

This is a guy who not only founded one of the biggest rock bands of all time and plays a multitude of instruments, he invented the Rockman guitar amp.

He was a top student in school, a member of the varsity basketball team, has a master's degree in mechanical engineering from M.I.T., and worked as a senior product design engineer for Polaroid, too.

Now add to that the fact that Tom founded his own charity, the DTS Charitable Foundation, which he founded in 1987.

He utilized this formal 501c3 registered charity to donate a major portion of his personal earnings from the music business for the promotion of the vegetarian lifestyle, and prevention of cruelty and suffering to animals both nonhuman and human.

As Tom says on the DTS website, "We have such a close connection with animals. I feel a responsibility to help protect creatures that suffer at human hands."

I couldn't agree more.

Boston wrapped up their 2012 tour this past September.

There's no news currently on when Tom and the band will be hitting the road again.

Happy birthday to a great musician and caring man!
