Tom Petty’s Statement on Fire Marshal Shutting Down Show

The details are still being sorted out, but lax security appears to have been the culprit at Saturday night’s (June 8) prematurely ended Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show, which found the Los Angeles fire marshal forced to pull the plug with 45 minutes to go in the band’s set list.

Petty’s team addressed the unfortunate incident in a post on his website, titled ‘Statement From Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Regarding Last Night’s Early Conclusion to the Concert at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.’ Assuring those in attendance that “we are as frustrated as you are,” the post reminded everyone that “First and foremost, the safety of our fans is our primary concern.”

According to Petty’s post, the problem wasn’t that the venue sold too many tickets; rather, it was that there were simply too many people on the floor — meaning that concertgoers were bypassing security somehow and ending up on the main level instead of on the terrace or the balcony.

“Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and our representatives rely on the concert promoter and venue representatives to give us an accurate breakdown of the legal capacity for every part of the building and to provide security and other staff to enforce this,” the statement continued. “We are still investigating all details of last night’s situation and will keep you informed.”

Meanwhile, Petty and the band seem to have gotten through their return to the venue Sunday night (June 9) without a hitch; their run of shows at the Fonda is set to conclude Tuesday (June 11).
