Tom Petty Releases New Single ‘American Dream Plan B’
The three-minute song can be heard below care of Rolling Stone, where Petty admits the song was a tough sell to his band, whose collective reaction was silence when he first played them the song. “I said, ‘Listen, I think we have something here, but we’re going to have to get excited about it.'”
Against a tight, down-and-dirty Mike Campbell guitar riff, Petty sings the verses — which are about a guy who’s still fighting for his chance — with his trademark snarl, but the song opens up to a bright, pump-your-fist chorus. After an acoustic break, Campbell unleashes a solo straight out of ‘Louie Louie‘ before Petty returns for a final verse.
‘Hypnotic Eye’ will be released July 29, but those who pre-order the record on Amazon or iTunes beginning June 10 will be able to download five of its tracks immediately. On Aug. 3, Petty and the Heartbreakers will embark on a two-month tour of North America. Steve Winwood is slated as the opening act.
