This is the second year in a row a temporary driving ban on the beach at Island Beach State Park will be happening due to an endangered bird. The driving ban begins Friday June 23rd

The Piping Plovers has nested on the Southern Park of the island and is considered a threatened species. Federal law requires Island Beach State Park to close the area of the nesting birds to vehicle traffic when the eggs are expected to hatch.

According to the Patch:

The vehicle barrier will be erected approximately 1,200 meters north of the jetty, and employees from the state Division of Fish & Wildlife have placed protective fencing around the nest to keep it safe from predators, such as seagulls and foxes.

Last year, the same area was closed to vehicles from June to mid August. Click HERE to read the full story
