Other than emitting an unbearably loud mating call, these cicadas pose no threat to humans, and really have no interest. The general rule: If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone.
We already told you about those 17 year periodical cicadas emerging this spring...BILLIONS of these bugs lie dormant for 17 years and then pop up though the ground like a horror movie. That is supposed to happen this May. Well hang onto your hat because apparently this influx of cicadas triggers other things to happen like an increase in pit vipers! PIT VIPERS!
You get up every morning, grab some breakfast, and then your off to work or school but all of the sudden you hear a loud screeching sound coming from the trees. These are insects known as cicadas and there are a couple reasons as to how and why they make such a pulsating sound.
Cicadas are red-eyed bugs that emerge from the ground every 17 years. They're pretty noisy (though, their sound is soothing to me) and a little creepy. But we might not see as many cicadas here in New Jersey.
They appear every 17 years and last for a month or so. This summer they make their return. The Lovely Christina will be thrilled to see this video. For real excitement, fast forward to :38
Why do they come you might be asking yourself? In a nutshell....It's a "sex and death" party. They come out of the ground. They have sex. They lay their eggs....and die!
