Super Bowl Saturday Movies

Super Bowl Saturday is one of the longest days of the year. All the buildup, all the storylines, all the drama is just hours away, and kickoff cannot come soon enough. Here is a list of my five favorite football movies that can help the time go by quicker. Get some popcorn and some friends and enjoy! (The order of the list is not steadfast, it’s actually pretty fluid, so don’t hold me to it.)

5

The Program

A young Halle Berry AND a young Kristy Swanson? How do I apply to that college?

I feel like this movie was overlooked when it first came out, but I’ve noticed it on TV a lot lately. If you want to get a view into the world of an intense college football program with a lot of crazy/memorable characters, give it a shot.

4

Black Sunday

Terrorists crash a blimp into the Super Bowl. Considering this movie came out in 1977, it had some surprisingly (and unfortunately) relevant themes.

Featuring footage from Super Bowl X between the Steelers and Cowboys, football isn’t really the focus of this movie. Instead we have some deep political ideologies dueling it out; a disillusioned VietNam vet joins up with Black September, and an Israeli agent is out to stop them.

Varsity Blues

Football. Parties. Pet pigs. Whipped-cream bikinis. Have I said anything that is unappealing?

High school football is a religion in Texas, and this movie features all the madness that both the players and the coaches are allowed to get away with. Features a great young cast that you will recognize in a lot of things today (Paul Walker, Scott Caan, Amy Smart and others).

2

Rudy

We all know that a lot of it was fictionalized. Stop trying to spoil the fun for the rest of us.

If you’ve never seen “Rudy”, you haven’t lived, and you have no right to call yourself a football fan. Seriously, go right now and stream it or rent it or do whatever you need to do and watch it.

1

Remember the Titans

This is one of those movies that I will sit down and watch whenever I surf past it on TV.

Again, much of it was Disney-fied to make it a more dramatic story, but it was still based on an incredible true story. Great casting, great pacing, and a phenomenal soundtrack make this a must-watch for football fans.
