Steve Perry Returns to Stage

Steve Perry performed publicly on Sunday (May 25) evening for the first time since the ’90s in an unusual setting. The former Journey vocalist made a surprise appearance at a concert by alternative rock band Eels during their show at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN.

Together, Perry and Eels delivered faithful renditions of Journey’s hits ‘Open Arms,’ and ‘Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, the latter of which prompted a hearty sing-along from those in attendance. Whether they appreciated that they were witnessing a historic event of sorts or not, the audience ate up every moment of Perry’s appearance on stage.

Steve Perry originally left the ranks of Journey in 1986 but reunited with the group a decade later for ‘Trial By Fire.’ Perry again departed the band once the promotional and touring cycle for the album was complete. Though there were many rumors flying around that Journey were looking to reconcile with Perry, the band’s management denied that any such discussions were taking place.

Perry has maintained a relatively low profile since his departure from Journey. With only two solo records to his credit (1984′s ‘Street Talk‘ and 1994′s ‘For The Love Of Strange Medicine’), the singer has hinted that he has new music in the works but few further details have been made available. He did, however, reportedly collaborate with electronic band AWOLNATION for a track on their next record.
