Lockdown Lifted At 3 Jackson Schools After Shots Fired Nearby
Students from three Jackson Township schools are being allowed home after shots were heard from a neighborhood near the Lucy Holman Elementary School.
According to a notice on the Jackson School District website, a lockdown at the Holman Elementary, McAuliffe Middle and Jackson Liberty High Schools has been completely lifted for all students. Buses will pick up students first from Jackson Liberty and then from the McAuliffe and Holman schools as soon as possible. Parents may pick up students.
School officials says they are releasing students to their buses as quickly as possible but cannot offer a time when they will get home.
The Ocean County Signal reports a "person of interest" has been detained and the scene completely cleared with all roads open. A home in the area was struck by gunfire according to Jackson Police but offered no details.
The lockdown was put in place when 8 large caliber gunshots were heard coming from a home on nearby Laurelton Avenue, one block from the Holman Elementary School, as a field day was underway late on Thursday morning.
School officials confirm that at no point were students endangered and that no shots were fired inside or near the buildings.
