Ocean County Democrats seeing a rise in elected-office workshops

Democrats opposition to the Donald Trump Presidency is having a ripple effect here in Ocean County with potential future leaders looking to be a voice for change.

Longtime Democratic Activist Marta Harrison says there’s been a rise in attendance at elected office workshops since Trump took office.

“People are really frightened by Trump’s agenda,” said Harrison. “They think it’s bad for the country and want to do their part to resist it.”

She feels it’s more of a concern the country is heading in the wrong direction than just opposing Trump.

“People are concerned about the immigration bans,” explained Harrison. “People are concerned about the foreign policy blunders.”

Harrison says she believes Trump sees no moral difference between The United States and Russia.

As a result of their opposition an increasing number of Democratic hopefuls in Ocean County, in the hundreds, are signing up for elected-office workshops.

“I’ve never seen in my lifetime as much activism, anger and desire to fix things,” said Harrison.

At some of the recent workshops she says the room has been packed.

“I would say 90-percent of the people in the room I had never seen before,” said Harrison. “That’s not typical at a Democratic event.”

She believes a changed atmosphere in Ocean County Democratic Circles is coming soon.

The latest workshop will take place Thursday at the Barnegat Library and Harrison adds that in these meetings they provide all the necessary information to anyone thinking of holding local office.

“We are encouraging people to get involved in their clubs and run for office if they’re interested,” said Harrison.

She adds they’re also providing information on President Trump’s policies at these workshops and what they can do to make a difference.

“We’re giving people information such as phone numbers and how to contact their Congressman,” said Harrison.

She says this includes forming a woman’s caucus and a young Democrats group.

If you can’t attend tonight’s workshop which is near full capacity, then Harrison encourages you to contact them if your interested in becoming involved and attending future meetings.
