A 5-year-old student at the International Academy of Trenton was playing with a white packet that his teacher thought was a candy wrapper, a police spokesman said.

The teacher told the student to put the wrapper away. The student pulled it back out, at which point the teacher confiscated it and realized it was a packet of heroin. Then she looked in his lunchbox and found 29 more packets of the drug.

The student was taken to Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, where he was tested and came back negative for opioids and is in good health.

Detectives from the criminal bureau are investigating to determine where the boy got the drugs. So far, no one has been charged. The police also declined to comment on whether the boy has been reunited with his parents or if he is in the custody of child welfare officials, nor if police interviewed the parents.
