Even though we have another winter storm reaching New Jersey this week, the annual cleaning of water distribution system's are underway.

New Jersey American Water who serves customers across the entire state will be running these tests from now thru the fall in different municipalities to "flush out harmless mineral deposits that may have built up in the pipe’s inner walls."

In a stated release, the company says "flushing the water mains involves loosening sediment by pumping a high velocity of water into the pipes then out through open fire hydrants."

Officials say if the water mains are being cleaned out where you live on a given day, you may notice or experience low water pressure or discolored water.

If that's the case, they have some tips on how to get your clean-clear water back:

  • Draw water for cooking prior to the flushing period.
  • Store a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher.
  • If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check faucet screens for trapped particles.

For the day the water flushing will reach your town, visit the NJAW website or call, text or email by enrolling in New Jersey American Water’s CodeRED customer notification system at www.amwater.com/myaccount.
