This week's lock down at Monmouth University came to a safe end with no injuries. Rather than a potential mass shooting, things turned out to be a failed robbery attempt.

Late Tuesday night, two female students were approached by a man by the MU underpass that runs beneath Route 71. The man pulled a gun and told them to give up their cell phones. The girls ran to the nearest building, the Magill Dining Hall, and called the police.

Keith Williams, an offensive lineman on the football team, was charged and taken to Monmouth County jail, with bail set at $100,000. The police found Williams in his dorm, and the gun turned out to be a fake.

Williams was immediately suspended indefinitely from the team, but university spokesperson Tara Peters said in an email that "federal privacy laws prohibit us from sharing information about students’ disciplinary record."

I know it's a cliche, but this incident does hit closer to home for me. As an alum of Monmouth, I can clearly visualize every detail of this. The underpass between the dorms and the main campus was built during my time there, I can see that the Dining Hall would be the best bet to flee to, I can just picture every aspect. Thankfully no one was hurt, and I'm glad my alma mater handled the situation well.
