Black Friday used to just be the day after Thanksgiving. Some stores started doing early morning openings at 6am, then 6 became 5am, then 5am became midnight, then midnight became Thanksgiving night.

As stores kept pushing earlier and earlier, public backlash finally grew to the point where now many businesses are reversing course and letting employees stay home with their family for the holiday.

Best Black Friday has a list of retailers that have made announcements about being closed for Thanksgiving.
