Manahawkin Tornado Confirmed By National Weather Service [PHOTOS/VIDEO]

National Weather Service investigators have confirmed that a tornado touched down in Manahawkin on Tuesday morning as part of the powerful storms that moved through the area.

According to the investigators report the storm touched down at the intersection of Route 9 and Oak Avenue at 10:05 a.m. "Numerous trees were blown down or snapped" along the tornado's path. The report notes damage to the roof of the Manahawkin Baptist Church before lifting 2 miles away at Hilliard Boulevard and Beach Avenue.

No injuries or fatalities were attributed to the tornado.

The tornado was a zero on the EF-scale of rating tornadoes with maximum wind speed of 75-85 MPH. It is the weakest possible tornado on the 1-5 scale.

Many in the area described hearing what sounded like a train when the tornado passed. Heather Nelke told  Jersey Shore Hurricane News and Newsworks "I was more scared in the 45 seconds of the storm than I was for the entire duration of Hurricane Sandy," she says. "To put it in perspective, we had one tree down during Sandy. 13 snapped and uprooted today."

The storms also contained a lot of lightning; KYW TV reported 6,000 lightning strikes from Gloucester County to Ocean County between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. A home in Egg Harbor Township was struck by lightning causing minor damage to the roof according to WMGM TV.

Upwards of 14,000 Atlantic City Electric customers were without power yesterday in Gloucester, Atlantic and Ocean counties; just under 1,000 are still in the dark in Gloucester County according to their outage map.

Tuesday's tornado was the second confirmed of the year in New Jersey. A tornado went through Berkeley Heights, New Providence, and Summit at the end of June. A "gustando" also moved through Manchester and Jackson in July.
