Police say a 68-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck in a hit-and-run accident in Brick Township and police are asking the public's help to find the driver.

James Joseph Cox suffered multiple serious injuries after being hit around 5:45 p.m. Monday while crossing Lanes Mill Road in front of Parkway Pizza just south of Burnt Tavern Road. There is a bus stop and commuter lot nearby.  The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is now involved with the case.

Police say the driver of a dark red Nissan, either an Altima or Sentra, was making a slowed down briefly before leaving the scene. A passerby tended to Cox until emergency crews arrived.

The car has front end damage that includes the grill, hood and windshield. Lanes Mill Road was closed for 2 1/2  hours as police conducted an investigation.

Cox is in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
