Today, Monday, October 13, is Columbus Day, the day we recognize a man behaving like a typical guy on a trip--refusing to admit he's lost.

"They're Indians, dammit, and I'm sticking with that story." :-D

Of course, Columbus was no typical guy..he was an explorer...but he was also clearly an a-hole.

In fact, Christopher Columbus makes Ted Bundy look like the kind of guy Columbus would probably have coached on the best way to deliver torture and murder to his victims.

Get the details (in case you don't already know them) at rawstory.com which reveals the ugly truth about Columbus and his men that really make celebrating this guy seem like a pretty bad idea.

Which is why some cities have decided to recognize the day a different way, according to cnn.com:

For the first time this year, Seattle and Minneapolis will recognize the second Monday in October as "Indigenous People's Day." The cities join a growing list of jurisdictions choosing to shift the holiday's focus from Christopher Columbus to the people he encountered in the New World and their modern-day descendants.

Which makes sense of course, because Columbus didn't actually "discover" the "New World", as indigenous people had been living in it for centuries by the time he arrived, and his voyages established lasting connections between Europe and Americans that paved the way for its colonization, leading to the subjugation and decimation of the indigenous population.

Don't we have enough a-holes in the world--as evidenced by trolls on the internet, not to mention people on reality shows? :-D

Do we really need to celebrate them?

P.S. I vote for Al Pacino or Frank Sinatra Day. Now there's a holiday we can really celebrate!
