Lemonade Day FAQ:

What is Lemonade Day?

Lemonade Day is a community-wide educational program that teaches youth the entrepreneurial skills necessary to start, own, and operate their own business … a lemonade stand.

How did Lemonade Day get started?

Houston entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Holthouse co-founded non-profit Prepared 4 Life (P4L) with his wife Lisa in 2005.  P4L began as an after-school program directed at teaching youth entrepreneurial and life skills along with character development.  Inspired by events leading up to his daughter Lissa opening a lemonade stand, Michael saw first-hand the value and potential that a city-wide Lemonade Day could offer children in their understanding of entrepreneurship.   Lemonade Day was formerly launched in Houston in 2007 and has since spread to cities all across the country with more than 200,000 youth participating in 2013.

Who can Participate?

Youth of all ages can register to receive their free yellow backpack and entrepreneurial workbook. Youth can participate individually with an adult mentor or in a participating school or youth organization.

How does it work?

Youth who register (most typically 3rd – 6th graders) are taught 14 lessons from their entrepreneurial workbook with either a parent, teach, youth organization leader or other adult mentor.  At the conclusion of the lessons, they are prepared to open their first business … a lemonade state. Lemonade Day city leadership will partner with the city Health Department to request one day waivers for permits. Each youth keeps the money they earn and decides what will do with it: spend some on something they want, save some in a local bank and/or share with a local charity of their choice.

What do children learn?

Youth learn the steps and planning necessary to start a business, but just as importantly, learn valuable life skills, such as leadership, collaboration, responsibility, and teamwork.  They learn to set a goal, make a plan, and work their plan to achieve their dreams!  In the process they experience a new level of confidence, and some for the first time, see new possibilities for their future … HOW INCREDIBLE IS THAT?

Who can get involved and how?

Everyone in the community is invited to participate! We need volunteers, mentors, businesses, to provide safe stand locations, and customers to buy lemonade from our young entrepreneurs on Lemonade Day. We also need sponsors to underwrite program and materials cost since Lemonade Day is a free program to youth. Visit http://tomsriver.lemonadeday.org to get involved today!
