On May 13, 2011, Volpe, a Jackson Memorial High School Senior, was tragically killed as a passenger in a car accident.

The foundation was started shortly after to pay tribute to the baseball player beloved by so many in the community.

"We're trying to keep James' name alive in a very positive way," said Rob Meleo, Co-Chairperson.

Meleo said the charity has also allowed Mr. and Mrs. Volpe to parent in a different way while also remembering their son.

"And trying to do as much good in the community as we can," Meleo said.

The James Volpe Foundation has raised more than $40,000 for a variety of initiatives. They have annually donated scholarships to students at both Jackson high schools and added one this year to Kean University, where James was set to attend before the fatal crash.

Meleo said they have also supported local families in need and made a recent donation to Children's Specialized Hospital. They plan to expand their reach to organizations, such as: Make-a-Wish, St. Jude's, and the Wounded Warrior Project.

The foundation holds two major annual fundraisers, a golf outing and wiffle ball tournament/family day.

"We're very dependent on big turnouts for those, and so far, people have been supporting us," Meleo said. "And we appreciate that support."

The 5th Annual James Volpe Foundation Wiffle Ball Tournament and Family Day will be held on Saturday, August 8 at Holbrook Little League Complex in Jackson, NJ.

The event features a day of fun and activities for the whole family with an admission price of just $5 per person. That cost includes all the food and soft drinks you can eat and drink.

"For five dollars, they should come out and check it out because it's an awesome event. It's really kind of like one giant block party."
