A study from the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record has revealed which states have the most guns per capita.

45. New Jersey
For every 1,000 residents in New Jersey, there are 5.8 guns. That's 51,670 registered firearms dispersed among 8,899,339 people.

New York actually comes in at the lowest on the list, with just 3.3 guns per 1,000 people. New Jersey is flanked by Hawaii (46th, 5.1 guns per thousand) and Iowa (44th, 6.1 per thousand).

Number one on the list? Wyoming, with 195.7 guns per thousand people. That's 114,052 registered firearms in a state with a population of only 582,658 people. Amazingly, Wyoming is almost three times higher than #2, Washington DC (66.4 guns per thousand people).

The list is obviously flawed in that it only counts legal, registered guns. It also only includes categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.
